Structural steel components have to obtain CE marking.

From July 2014, manufacturers of metallic welding products seeking to market them within the European Union They are required to have CE Marking, in compliance with standard UNE 1090.

The scope of this standard is quite broad, so asking "what steel structures need CE marking?" is very common. To clear up any doubts, we will now explain in a simple way which ones require this marking and what requirements are needed to obtain it.

Which metal structures need to have a CE marking?

Following the UNE 1090 standard, the metal structures that must obtain CE marking are the following:

Workshop-fabricated structures

This includes products made of either steel or aluminium. Therefore, works carried out on site that are subject to other regulations, such as CTE or ISO 3834, are excluded.

Structures that are to be permanently part of civil engineering works or buildings

At this point, structures used for support during construction, such as mobile scaffolding, are excluded.

Load-bearing structures

Those subject to structural design. It is important to stress that the product liability rests with the manufacturer, regardless of who carried out the design, whether it was the client themselves or an external company.

To make it easier to understand, the metal structures that require CE marking include, but are not limited to:

  • Those that fulfil the purpose of supporting solar panels.
  • Motorway signs.
  • Structures for silos.
  • Those permanently used in civil engineering projects, such as bridges or stadiums.

CE Marking Requirements

To obtain CE marking, certain requirements must be met, these are:

Conformity assessment

The metal structures that have to obtain CE marking will have to undergo a Conformity Assessment System. This includes a Factory Production Control certification, which is awarded by a Notified Body.

Other requirements

  • Welders must be approved.
  • A Welding Coordinator is required.
  • Carry out Factory Production Control.
  • Carry out the Initial Type Tests or Calculations.

Why is CE Marking important?

The importance of CE marking is that it ensures that metal structures comply with all standards and the requirements to be marketed in countries within the European Union.

Thus, all the factors dictated by the UNE 1090 standard are met, eliminating the probability of unreliable quality management systems that are detached from the reality of production.
