How do we improve the PLr performance level on a machine

In the Valencian Community, more and more companies Industrial machinery seek to guarantee the safety of their operators and avoid penalties. One of the most direct ways is to comply with the requirements for Health and safety included in Royal Decree 1215/1997. In this article, we will tell you, step by step, how we adapt a CNC cutting table Regarding the aforementioned regulations, what were the challenges and what solutions did we implement to protect both the machinery and the worker.

Risk assessment for an industrial CNC cutting machine

Every adaptation project begins with an exhaustive risk assessment. Our client – a leading Valencian firm in roofing and metal profiling solutions – contacted us to analyse the condition of their cutting machine. The report identified two main deficiencies:

  1. Exposed transmissions on the table legs, with risk of entrapment.
  2. Control system without it Performance Level required by standard UNE-EN ISO 13849.

These findings marked the roadmap for the subsequent conformity with Royal Decree 1215/97.

Security improvements applied to comply with regulations

Sheet metal longitudinal protection

To isolate lateral transmissions, we installed custom-made metal guards. They were laser-cut, folded, and finished with the client's corporate colour, so they offer:

  • Mechanical resistance to impacts.
  • Quick release for maintenance.
  • Aesthetic integration with the table.

Gaiter on the transverse shaft

One of the fundamental improvements to reinforce the security of this CNC cutting table it has been the protection of exposed transmission elements. In the transversal axis, has been installed Bespoke bellows which fully covers the transmission belt access. This flexible element acts as a physical barrier, preventing accidental contact with moving parts during machine operation, which significantly reduces the risk of entrapment.

Metal guards on the transmission

Furthermore, on both sides of the machine, they have been placed Longitudinal protective elements made of sheet metal, designed specifically to block access to transmissions running through these zones. These casings provide robustness and protection without interfering with the operational movement of the shafts, thus guaranteeing both operator safety and the continuity of the production process.

These solutions allow compliance with the safety and health requirements established in Royal Decree 1215/1997, directly improving the work environment and protection against mechanical accidents.

Certified Security Module

To achieve the required PLr level, we have installed a safety module compliant with the UNE-EN-ISO 13849-1 standards.

  • Fault detection.
  • Safe stop time,
  • Integration with the existing emergency stop system.
